Taylor Crawford

BFA: Graphic Design - User Experience Design Certificate

Artist Name:

Taylor Crawford

Work Title:

Vessel For the Soul

Medium:

Multimedia - projected frame by frame animation, moss, vine

Artist Statement:

This work gives form to an experience that is often internal—the physical and emotional cycles of living with cancer, shaped by treatment and unexpected medical interventions. These cycles create a sense of instability, where progress and setback are intertwined, and the notion of “normal” is constantly shifting.

Animation allows this experience to unfold over time, reflecting the internal, spiritual dimension of illness, and the ways it can erode the spirit even as the body perseveres. Through symbolic imagery, vines represent growth and sense of self before diagnosis. Then after, when the body becomes a vessel for the soul, capable of weakening, collapsing, and rebuilding. Rather than depicting a single moment, the animation moves through states of becoming and unraveling, emphasizing change as a non linear process.
