Artist Name:
Hanah Sakinovic
Work Title:
Medo | Balkan Bakery
Medium:
Mixed Media
Artist Statement:
Medo began as an idea to commemorate and share a familiar ritual for many Bosnians in our motherland: stopping for krofne (Bosnian donuts) in the city center or visiting a pekara (bakery) early in the morning while the pastries are still fresh. Over time, this idea evolved into a café and bakery experience that not only celebrates these beloved pastries but also highlights an overlooked reality. Despite more than 70,000 Bosnians living in St. Louis—the largest Bosnian population outside of Bosnia itself—our culture and language remain largely unrecognized by many non-Bosnians in the city.
With Medo, my goal was to create a space where Bosnians feel at home through familiar language, flavors, and hospitality, while also proudly—and loudly—sharing our culture with the broader community. By centering on Bosnian traditions and language in the experience, Medo encourages others to encounter, learn about, and engage with a culture that has long been part of St. Louis but is often overlooked.
Artist Bio:
Hanah Sakinovic is a graphic designer that specializes in brand and print design. Hanah is a first-generation child of Bosnian immigrants, and she has spent her life navigating the space between two cultures—an experience many children of immigrants can relate to. With Medo, she uses experiential design, branding, print design, and, of course, bosnian donuts as the vehicle that closes the gap between Bosnians and non-Bosnians, educating everyone in a digestible way—pun intended.
Much of her work involves identifying, understanding, and addressing an existing problem within a specific demographic. In her practice, Hanah keeps people at the center of her work, using empathy and compassion as she solves problems with design.
