Work Title:
“Is My Body A Temple?”
Medium:

Artist Statement:
The piece I have decided to create for this exhibition delves into a sense of conflicting feelings revolving around sex and intimacy. It expresses both the beauty and discomfort a person could feel while they experience one of the most vulnerable events someone could go through. This piece uses ink work, collage, paint, and various text in order to truly convey the back and forth between the beautiful and the emotional experience. The collage in the background of the piece contains elements of poetry which I have been writing over the past several years, in order to add a more personal element within the piece and to bring the viewer in closer to spend more time with it and really take in the content. It also contains laser engraved glass within the frame which shows the text, “What if I want to be worshipped”. This text adds to the conflict faced, directly counteracting the emotion shown by the figure behind the text. While usually similar pieces will express either a feeling of disgust or a feeling of power, however I wanted to express my perspective on intimacy especially after going through several moments in my life where something which should be so beautiful left me feeling disgusted due to how I was treated by those I was meant to trust.
Artist Bio:
My current body of work focuses on self-reflection with my previous experiences, concepts I have struggled with, and events that have greatly impacted my life to date. My work is reflective of the constant conversation between a struggle to find my religious faith in conversation with previous religious trauma, coupled with questioning the love I’ve either been gifted or deprived of in familial and romantic relationships and a range of intense emotions that I am processing. The main goal is to create pieces which either disturb or comfort and to move away from work which could generally be considered aesthetically pleasing and closer to work which makes the viewer ask questions. The concept presented within my work is one which I am continuing to work on improving whenever it comes to the overall feeling which my pieces give my audience.
