Mikaila Zanghi

BFA: Art with an Emphasis in Illustration

Artist Name:

Mikaila Zanghi

Work Title:

Where did you go? (loss, fear, isolate, melancholy, self)

Medium:

Ceramic, ceramic glazes, foam, spray-paint, wood, adhesive, cremation ashes

Artist Statement:

This work is representative of my experience following the sudden death of a parent. Rather than focus on the immediate loss itself, I gravitated more to focusing on the aftermath of the loss and my emotional response. Each of the ceramic sculptures are figurative representations of specific aspects of my grief that have been particularly impactful —they are “manifestations” of both introspection and reality. I drew on the chaos and upheaval that comes from a sudden death, channeling that into the dynamism and appearance of the hybrid bestial figures, while also noting the quiet stillness of loss through my centerpiece. However, the notion of stillness can be found amongst the figurative sculptures as well, as they appear to be locked in stone, midst action, an homage to the way death freezes a being to a single moment.
