BFA: Art with Studio Emphasis in Painting - Dance: Technique Minor
Artist Name:
Nature is the lens through which I paint or depict the themes and topics I am interested in portraying. Family is the backdrop of my life and is the scenery that supports and enhances the story I am weaving as an artist. Because of this, my piece draws from themes rooted in nature, family, and childhood memories. The wispiness and flow of the materials act as a metaphor for the old childhood memories revealed in the pieces. The delicate nature of the wool, the way in which it stretches, becoming almost transparent, and the inherent blurriness that its texture imparts impacts viewers of my pieces the same way that memories do, and creates a perception of the comfort of cherished memories. While I am working with wool roving, there is a loss of control to an extent; while I might have an idea of a picture, it is ultimately the material that decides its final form. The weaving together of those branches of family and memories into pieces rooted in the beauty and simplicity of nature creates a shady refuge of rest and a soft place to land.

Artist Bio:
The art that Madsen chooses to create is themed around or rooted in nature, community, family, and memories. Whether or not she chooses to reference specific memories, they are always present, pushing her art somewhere that is rooted in the past. The wispiness and flow of the materials that she works with act as a metaphor for the idea of memories revealed in the pieces. Madsen might start with just a concept and then later create the image. Other times, it will reverse and, after she starts creating the image, more meaning is infused into her landscapes and other works, delving deeper into nature and her relationship with it.
